About John

John Gravett form Lakeland Photo HolidaysJohn is the photographic director of Lakeland Photographic Holidays. He picked up his first camera at the age of nine, and from the age of 14, when he got his first SLR, hardly a day has passed that he has not had a camera in his hands. John's first photographic subjects included concert photography, and he quickly moved into sport photography, including drag racing, motor cross, tennis, speedway, football and many other sports over the years.

Despite training as a chartered quantity surveyor, within two years of taking it up as a profession, John had moved into Architectural photography, including being the photographer at the reconstruction of Windsor castle.

His first ARPS (Associate of the Royal Photographic Society) was in sports photography, which he followed a couple of years later with another ARPS, this time in Cathedral architecture. Although most of John's photography now is landscape based, he still enjoys photographing theatre, sport and concerts. Other passions include city photography and candid images, which contribute to the Tuscan ad Marrakech workshops, with future possible locations including Cuba and Paris.

John has written articles for the photographic press for the past 20 years, titles include Practical Photography, Photography Monthly, Outdoor Photography, and Ephotozine.

He is also a regular exhibitor on the National and international circuit, and has received a number of awards for his work. He has also hosted a number of one-man exhibitions, the latest of which was a black-and-white exhibition of Lakeland Landscapes at the Theatre by the Lake.

Currently he is in the process of writing a number of photographic books, with one on Black & white landscapes well on its way, and a joint project with Lee Filters on use of filters about to go with it's second publication.

John is a firm supported of camera clubs and photographic societies. He is still a member of two clubs as well as the Royal Photographic Society, and each January, he goes “on the road” on a lecture tour round camera clubs. In 2009 he toured Scotland, 2010 the midlands and 2011 East Anglia. Next year he is booked for a number of lectures in the Herts / Beds area, with other lectures in Cumbria and Lancaster, and negotiations are already being made for the 2013 tour. Any programme secretaries please get in touch for future bookings.
