John Swannell on LPH photographic courses

The world famous photographer John Swannell attended our Black and White workshop in September 2009.

On leaving he said "Learnt more this week than I have in the last 2 years. The foods good too!"

Born in 1946, John Swannell is a highly respected and well-known British photographer. At the age of 16, Swannell left school and worked first as an assistant at Vogue studios and then assisted David Bailey for four years, before setting up his own studio.

In the next ten years that followed John Swannell spent the time traveling and working for magazines such as Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, The Sunday Times and Tatler. This is when he developed his distinctive and instantly recognizable style both in fashion and beauty photography. Swannell has photographed a vast range of celebrities, including Dame Judi Dench and Sir Elton John to contemporary pop singer Will Young. In 1994, Princess Diana commissioned him personally to photograph her with her two sons. Since then, he has also photographed HM The Queen for her Golden Jubilee. In 1989 and 1990 John Swannell became a household name in photography, with a one-man show at the Royal Academy and National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh. The Royal Photographic Society also held a retrospective of his fashion photography. In 1993, John Swannell was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society, making him one of the youngest members to ever achieve this status.
